Welcome to the Orbit
Welcome to the second incarnation of The Oort Cloud. The first time around, from 2008 to 2011, I wrote a blog called The Oort Cloud (http://the-oort-cloud.blogspot.com/, if you are interested). My wife and I were knee deep in raising two adopted little girls, and I used the metaphor of orbital mechanics to explore life and love and family and fiction.
This time around, quite a bit has changed. My wife became ill, I became first a caretaker, then a single Dad to our daughters. I did my time in the land of grief and duty. I ushered both my daughters into adulthood, and found love again. I was recently offered early retirement and jumped at the chance. Now I have new things to say, a 900 words a day minimum, and the time to meet it.
The real Oort Cloud, by the way, is a cloud of icy rocks surrounding the solar system. It’s WAY out there, a full light year away from the sun, and it’s not confined to the disc of the solar system, like a flat circle, but radiates in all directions, a sphere of planetesimals. Think of the planets as a chewy nougat center of the solar system, and the Oort Cloud as the crunchy chocolate coating.
Planet X may be hiding in the depths of the Oort Cloud, waiting to rain down destruction on us all, but more on that another day.
Thank you for subscribing to the Oort Cloud! A new short story comes out next month on Amazon, and I will publish new fiction once a month for the foreseeable future, or until I run out of stories. Be assured, I have a lot of stories.
